Site updates - 4th August, 2018

This week, there have been a number of improvements to World of Switch.

  1. Updated the Release calendar homepage. It now shows the number of games released each month right on the homepage. This also works for different regions. Additionally, the Release calendar homepage has a new look.
  2. Started adding packshots to games. Packshots are now available for all games released from March 2017 to October 2017 inclusive (using European release dates). You can see packshots on the release calendar pages - e.g. Release calendar: Oct 2017 - and on game pages - e.g. King Oddball. More packshots to be added soon.
  3. Added breadcrumbs to the site. These allow you to navigate upwards through the site. For instance, when viewing the list of Puzzle games, you can use the breadcrumb links to navigate up to "Games by genre", "Games", or the homepage.

Also, we wanted to mention that we've archived the Charts section, with a clear notice on each page to say that this area isn't being updated anymore.

This was the first feature on the site, so it has a bit of history. We stopped adding to it shortly after the eShop charts changed from a Top 15 to a Top 30, as this increased the time it took to add the charts to the site.

The main reason for archiving the charts is because they were not that useful to replicate on the website. While we included a unique feature to show whether games had moved up or down, and we also display rankings on game pages, the actual rankings were largely dominated by new releases and items on sale.

We think that other features at World of Switch, such as the Top Rated section and the Calendar, are far more useful than the charts became. Is it that useful to see games such as Minecraft in the charts almost every week, and smaller indie titles either disappearing after just one week, or not appearing at all?

The lack of significant movement or indeed any genuine surprise in the rankings meant it didn't seem worth the effort to recreate the eShop charts at WOS.

We'd much rather develop some member features where you can rate your favourite games and come up with our own charts, based on your feedback. Let us know via @worldofswitch if you'd be interested in this feature.
